Frequently Asked Questions
Q I’ve received a leaflet about the Street lighting replacement work.  What happens next?
A You will receive a notification letter in the next few months advising of the exact dates when Balfour Beatty will be working in your area.
Q What does the work involve?
A It will involve the installation of new columns, new lights and electricity supply cables and then the removal of the old columns.
Q Will the new columns be in the same position as the old columns?
A This cannot be guaranteed. In most cases the column locations will be design to new international standards which will result in their position changing. This will provide a consistent level of lighting. Additional lights may be installed at traffic junctions.
Q How can I find out where the new columns will be located?
A Plans will be available at the Balfour Beatty Office after you receive your notification letter.  You are welcome to drop in and have a look.  You can find our address at the top of the screen and details will be provided in the notification letter.
Q If a new column is installed outside my house, will I be disturbed by light shining through my window?
A The latest design and technology helps to ensure that light is mostly directed down towards the road and pavement - but there may be a small amount of backward light.  If you are concerned about this please contact our customer care team (either call us on 0800 0850 257  or email us at
Q Who can I speak to if I have a problem with a new column location?
A Please contact our customer care team (either call us on 0800 0850 257  or email us at
Q Why do the workmen not finish one street before starting on another?
A In order to provide the least expensive upgrade solution for Northamptonshire County Council and its Council Tax payers, we use a production line system where expert Balfour Beatty teams arrive for each particular stage of the process. A production line approach has been demonstrated in many industries to improve overall productivity.

All these teams need to be booked in advance and therefore, because each street is different and may have any number of issues at each stage of the process, this does mean that there may be periods when no work is being carried out. This is needed in order to ensure that the street will be ready for each team’s visit.

The site will be left in a safe and tidy manner until all our works are completed.
Q What do I do if I am concerned about the safety or condition of the works being carried out in my area?
A Please contact our customer care team (either call us on 0800 0850 257  or email us at
Q What can I do if I am concerned about columns being used to gain access to my property?
A Anti-climb paint can be applied to columns where appropriate. Please contact the customer care team for more information.
Q Can I express my views on the street lighting installation service?
A Yes, a questionnaire will be delivered to your house, which will enable you to make comments. All completed questionnaires will be evaluated with a view to improving the service to the public.
